I have yet to see any of the 3D acceleration in VMware 6. I heard that it was removed from it so I am somewhat upset by that.
As far as I know, 3D acceleration is still in Workstation 6 for Windows and Linux; it's just experimental, so there's no user interface to enable it.

The instructions here should work, although the level of support you get may vary:

Well, it seems to be ignored in VMware 6, and the Linux drivers have had the 3D acceleration code pulled out, with the reason being the code is checked for removal and the code had bitrotted, not supporting AIGLX....
Also, the Direct3D code should be updated to at least 9.0c so that Vista would run with Aero... Though I don't suppose that will happen anytime soon....
